HeartBit:
Making Complex Health Data Actionable
Product & Experience StrategyHeartBit is a heart-monitoring system designed to make clinical-grade ECG data accessible during physical activity.
Working with the startup from an early stage, András and his team at Flying Objects developed the project through an integrated design strategy spanning the physical product, wearable technology, mobile and watch applications, and professional data interfaces.
The challenge was not simply to design a medical device, but to turn a complex technological system into a coherent and understandable user experience.

HeartBit combines an ECG-enabled sports shirt, a central sensor unit, cloud-based data processing, mobile and watch applications, and a web interface for detailed medical data.
This created two levels of complexity: First, users needed to understand how the different physical and digital components connect and work together. Second, highly complex ECG measurements had to be translated into information that runners could understand and act on immediately – often while exercising.
The strategic challenge was therefore clear:
How can clinical-level complexity become a simple, actionable consumer experience?

We treated HeartBit as one connected product ecosystem rather than a collection of separate touchpoints.
The physical product was designed around the interaction between the sensor-equipped shirt and its central processing unit. In parallel, the digital experience established a clear hierarchy between information that requires immediate attention and data that can be explored later.
During exercise, the interface prioritises short instructions, strong visual signals and haptic feedback, allowing users to react without interpreting complex medical data.
More detailed information is moved into the broader digital ecosystem, where results can be reviewed and shared with healthcare professionals.

A central principle of the project was progressive complexity: users should only encounter the level of information they need at a given moment.
Instead of exposing the underlying scientific complexity, we designed the experience around decisions and actions.

HeartBit demonstrates how design can bridge the gap between advanced medical technology and everyday behaviour.
By approaching hardware, software and information as one experience, we helped transform sophisticated ECG technology into a product that could be understood and used outside a clinical environment.
The project was developed from an early-stage startup concept through a comprehensive design strategy to its first market appearance.
